Orange Biscuits - Biscoitos de Laranja

These are loved by everyone, and easy to make. This recipe makes about 50 biscuits but they will keep up to 4 weeks (if you can keep your hands off them) stored in a sealed container.

Make any shapes you like, have some fun and be creative, and get little ones to help you. You can also brush with beaten egg (before baking) and add sugar strands.

Ingredients bisc de laranja plate

750g plain flour
2 tsp baking powder
½ tsp baking soda (bicarbonate)
¼ tsp salt
300g sugar
225g butter
3 eggs
100ml orange juice
fine grated rind of 2 oranges

Method

Sift together flour, baking powder and baking soda.

2 Beat the butter and sugar together until smooth, then mix in the eggs (one at a time) alternating with orange juice. Blend well after each addition. Don’t worry if it separates.

3 Now fold in the flour mixture and knead in the bowl for 3 minutes until a smooth dough is achieved. If the dough is too dry or too wet you might need to add a little more orange juice or flour.

4 Pre-heat the oven to 180 Deg C, and line some baking sheets.

5 Take small amounts of dough and roll them into a rope about 1cm diameter and 20cm long. Shape into a coil or an S shape or anything you fancy then place onto the baking sheets.bisc de laranga

6 Bake for 15-20 minutes until golden brown.

Additional Notes

You can make an orange/lemon version by replacing 25ml of the orange juice with lemon juice and adding some grated lemon peel.

Get the kids involved they will love making these.
