Coimbra General Hospital Emergency unit (Accident & Emergency) will close at night from the 28th May for 3 months.
The announcement was made this week by the presidents of the board of the Central Hospital and University (CHUC), Jose Martins Nunes, and the Regional Health Administrator (ARS-Center), Jose Tereso.
The emergency department of Hospital commonly known Covões will stop accepting patients between 20h00 and 09h00, for the following three months.
All emergy night time cover will be transfered to Univesity Hospital, Hospitais da Universidade de Coimbra (HUC) for this time. Teams from INEM (National Emergency Ambulance service) will remain on site to assist people and transfer them to The Univesity Hospital.
The General Hospital (CHUC) has a catchment area covering 368,622 people in the districts of Coimbra and Leiria.
Coimbra, Montemor-o-Velho, Soure, Condeixa-a-Nova, Penela , Alvaiázere, Ansião, Castanheira de Pera, Figueiró Wine and Pedrógão Grande, and also gets referalls from hospitals in Figueira da Foz, Leiria and Pombal.
The emergency closure of the left bank of the Mondego at night is related to the restructuring and building work which will taking place to expand the hospital.
