Carnaval is officially on Tuesday the 28th February ( Pancake day in the UK) but will probably find that it has already started and will continue until Wednesday. Look out for the parades; most towns and villages will have one. In particular, Figuiera da Foz, Nazare and Torres Vedras are the big events on the Silver coast. The big days are Sunday and Tuesday.

Portugal welcomed 11.4 million foreign tourists in 2016 which is the sixth record year in a row. Official data out last week shows that a record number of foreign tourists stayed in Portuguese hotels last year. Revenues rose by more than 15% to 2.9 billion Euros. Topping this list of foreign visitors were the Brits, followed by Germans, Spaniards and the French. These figures do not include private bookings from companies like Airbnb.
