Brexit - the UK government is on summer recess now but recruiting is continuing in the 2 departments charged with handling the Brexit. There is talk of Article 50 waiting till the end of next year, which means no exit until end 2019 at least, but some EU countries are not happy about this delay. In the UK spending in July was higher than expected and unemployment is down, so this initial shock seems to be fading. Exchange rates are still struggling with the GBP:EUR at 1.16 this morning. Robert Peston from ITV lays out the possibility of a Canada style EU Trade Agreement.
2016 Rio Olympics - Team GB has 50 medals now and are second place in the table below USA, with 93 and above China with 54 (less golds). They are now in the final days, with lots more medals to be awarded yet, Portugal still have some hopes, so lets hope they come home with more than 1 bronze, again, like they did in 2012. The UK's Child Obesity Plan has finally been released by the government, to nationwide critisism from every direction. Even Jamie Oliver has commented on how poor and weak the plan is and how the government have totally missed this opportunity to turn around the future health of the nation and to be an example to other countries. The UK has the highest level of Child Obesity in Western Europe, with 1 in 3 children leaving Primary school being overweight. BBC
The Portugal governments plan to access all bank accounts is 'unconstitutional' according to Portugal Data Protection Commission, but the government plans to push though its proposal to come in line with other EU counties and its international commitments. Algarve Daily News
Hey Portugal are operating a collection for the local Bombeiros in Caldas da Rainha over the summer months. You can bring donations to our office at the Cencal roundabout near to Eleclerc - small bottles of water, snack & cereal bars, anything easy and quick to eat whilst they take a break from fighting the fires can be donated and we will ensure they are delivered. Also pop in to swap some books - all monies we raise from this go to the Bombeiros.
Weather - Weather for the next week looks a lot cooler throughout the whole country. Highs are in the top 20's rather than 30's as we have seen recently. northern areas of Leiria and further north will see some rain on Friday, which will be welcomed by the Bombeiros who are still damping down the worst hit areas in Aveiro region.
There are lots of local festas and music festivals going on throughout August, many are listed in our calendar and on our Facebook pages. There are a number of social events and coffee morning for ex-pats. International Ladies meet at the Internacional Hotel in Caldas da Rainha at 3pm on the 1st and 3rd Tuesday each month.
