Update 5th March 2011

figueirs da foz carnaval

Below is a report on the Carnaval at Figueira da Foz in 2010..

Well, we didn’t get the best weather this year, if wasn’t freezing cold and windy it was raining. But despite the weather the Carnaval spirit prevailed and as can be seen from the Gallery photos people turned out to parade and to watch.

Make a note for next year that in Central Portugal the Buarços Carnaval at Figueira da Foz is one of the biggest and most spectacular, so if you missed it this year make a note to yourself to visit it in 2011.

Bucarços Carnaval took place along the Avenida do Brazil on Tuesday 16th February in the rain as can be seen by the many umbrellas in the photos. RTP (TV Station) were there filming and everyone was smiling and having a good time. There were 3 main sections with live musical playing.accompaniment with each, in the form of singers riding along on high staged trucks.

The parade took about 2 ½ hours and by the end there were many of the salsa dancers dancing bare foot and some of the

figueira carnaval 2010costumes a little worse-for wear, but the girls were still dancing and smiling and the bands were still

You can see from the photos that the costumes were fantastic, many weeks or months work have gone into creating the magnificent head dresses and gowns, and even the costumes that were more-or-less not there!

I could not resist getting this photo of my kids with these dancers..they do not look anything like their real counterparts that protect Buckingham Palace but like the real Queen’s Foot Guards in the big, black bearskin hats these girls brought a smile to many faces.

Throughout different town carnivals there were people dressed up, from the very young to the very old.

Let’s hope we have better weather for Carnaval 2011..!
