Congresso da Sopa

This weekend on the 8th of May the Congresso da Sopa takes place in Tomar.

This weekend on the 8th of May the Congresso da Sopa takes place in Tomar. During the Congresso there will be dozens of different soups to try plus various wines from 5 of the county’s different wineries.

The even takes place in Mouchão Park which for those of you that are unfamiliar with Tomar is on the island near the river. Additionally many restaurants around the town will be offering their own special soup recipes. The event starts from 12.30pm.

Tickets cost eight euros for those over 12 years and five euros for children from 5 to 12 years. You can also purchase a family ticket for two adults and two children for €24

Included in the price is unlimited soup, bread, water and coffee and you also get a tasting kit consisting of bowl, cup and spoon.

Now in its’ 17th consecutive year, the aim is to encourage the consumption of soup as well as having a reason to have a festa. All profits generated go to The Center for Integration and Retrieval Tomar (CIRE), an institution that works with people with disabilities.

As always, the menu ranges from more traditional soups, such as fish, stone or vegetables, and newer ideas like catfish, eel broth, piglet in Caçoilo or cheese dumpling soup. Make sure you try something new and be sure to take your dictionary or phrase book.

On Sunday the 9th of May, as well as the Soup Festa, there will be a 19th Century local market with vendors dressed in traditional costumes.
