Obidos Vila Natal - Christmas Town

Vila Natal translates to Christmas Town. obidos vilanatal1

In December every year, the town of Obidos turns itself into a spectacle of lights and entertainment to celebrate Christmas.

Obidos is in central Portugal on the coast. You can access it from the A8 motorway by junction 17.

Each year the theme is different. Traditional fairy tales are brought to life by characters who will chat with you and like having photos taken. You will find Santa Claus' house and workshop. There are many elves and other colourful characters around the town. The castle walls serve as a backdrop to stages, theatre, music and lots more.

There are lots of places to eat and drink both inside and outside the castle walls so make a day of it, there is lots to see and do.

You have to try the Ginja da Obidos, their famous cherry Liqueur served in chocolate cups, which you eat after you have drunk the Ginja.

The most spectacular time is after dark when the light are lit. The churches and castle walls are draped in lights and a roof of lights runs the length of the mains street. Some years they have had snow machines making real snow. obidos vilanatal3

If you are feeling a little active then you can normally try skiing, tobogganing and they have indoor ice rinks for any skaters out there.

Families travel from all over Portugal to visit this magical place, whether you are 8 or 80 we promise it will bring a smile to your face.

The website www.obidosvilanatal.pt has information you need about the events, opening times and prices. Closer to the time of the event the website will have schedules of the shows and spectaculars which are taking place.

The event starts at the beginning of December and continues until the first week in January. Check Hey Portugal Calender for this years dates.

You can book your tickets online and if you are planning to visit at a weekend this is highly advisable and the queues get very long.
