Census 2011 results. 

The results show that the population residing in Portugal as at 21 March (Census day) was to 10,555,853 persons. As far as the resident population is concerned, this amounts to a positive increase of around 2%.  

The regions which experienced growth in resident population were the Algarve (14%), the Autonomous Regions of the Azores (2%) and Madeira (9%) and Lisbon (6%). By contrast, resident population in the Centre region and the Alentejo declined. There were some specific exceptions to this, most notable the municipalities of the Oeste and Pinhal Litoral Regions (which make up the Silver Coast) which both saw large increases in Resident Population.

Marinha Grande, Leiria and Lourinha,Batalha had 5-10% growth in Residents. In addition Obidos, Torres Vedras and Caldas da Raihna all have over 5% growth in Residents since 2001.

The number of residents overall in the North region underwent no change in the past 10 years.

In the period under review there was a more noticeable relocation of the resident population to the Lisbon metropolitan area or Lisbon’s neighbouring municipalities.

Inland municipalities recorded greater losses in population and the coastal area tended to maintain its figures.

The number of households rose by about 12%, i.e. the average number of persons per household declined to 2.6.
The housing stock continued to follow an upward trend as already seen in the previous decade. Portugal has over 12% of residential buildings and 16% of residential dwellings.
